Application to doctoral study

Admission procedure

After successful completion of the admission procedure and passing the entrance examination, the student is required to fill in the Individual Study Plan form in the KOS system (usually by the end of November or February, according to the date of admission). This document lists the compulsory examinations and their dates.

Each academic year, the PhD student is required to write an “Annual PhD Progress Report” prepared with the supervisor and submit it to the Department of Science, Research, and International Relations, which forms the basis for assessment of the student's academic performance and higher bursary , or dismissal from the programme in case of academic neglect.

The coursework component of the programme (the study module), i.e. passing all mandatory examinations, inclusive of the language examination/examinations (as appropriate), submission of a report on the current state-of-the-art of the research topic and defence of the report should be completed no later than two years after the commencement of the full-time form of the programme or three years after the commencement of the combined form of the programme.

No later than five years after commencement of the programme, the student is required to pass the final oral State Doctoral Examination. The Application for Admission to the State Doctoral Examination is to be submitted to the Department of Science, Research, and International Relations, together with a list of publications, and a short report on current research. Selection of topics and issues of the examination are subject to the regulations of the Subject Area Board.

Completion of the Programme

The final prerequisite for completion of the programme is successful defence of the dissertation. The Application for Defence of the Dissertation is to be submitted to the Department of Science, Research, and International Relations, together with four bound hard copies of the dissertation, the dissertation in electronic form in PDF format (via e-mail or on a CD/DVD), the supervisor's assessment, list of publications (stating separately publications related to the dissertation topic and the others) including their citations as well as the Clearance Certificate for Doctoral Students. Formal requirements for dissertations are regulated by the Dean's Directive 2014/2.

Programme interruption

The programme may be interrupted or its duration extended upon an application, submitted to the Department of Science, Research, and International Relations.
