Lecture and Workshop

Date: 11th October at 16:00
Place: T-101

Speaker: Darren Copeland

BC. PGCE

You would be amazed to discover just how many delegates at conferences find concentrating on the speaker’s presentation almost impossible. After the first few minutes of a presentation, audience attention drops off significantly. So, at your next conference, how can you ensure that your years of hard work researching, and the hard-won results, will not fall on deaf ears?

Giving presentations in English is a challenge, especially if you don’t consider yourself a natural-born public speaker. In my experience, mathematicians and scientists often consider themselves more naturally introverts than extroverts, and the thought of presenting their work in public is a frightening prospect. A nervous presenter is just one of several factors that can result in poor communication and distracted audiences.

So how to become less nervous, more confident, and clearer in communicating to other academics and non-specialists are the aims of this lecture and workshop. I would like to assist by providing a few helpful tips on public speaking and by offering several approaches that help with confidence and clarity of delivery so that your audiences are entertained and informed rather than bored and switched off.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday 11th October at 16:00 in Trojanova, room T-101. It will be followed by a workshop where attendees will have an opportunity to practise the skills. Ideally, if you have one, bring a laptop to the workshop session, which starts at 18:00.
